Special Care Nursery

Welcome to our Level II Special Care Nursery (SCN), where we provide individualized care for healthy newborns as well as those requiring extra love and attention. Our dedicated team of professionals is committed to ensuring the well-being of your little one through safe, compassionate, family-centered care.

Services Offered

  • Premature Birth Care: Madison Hospital's SCN provides specialized care for preterm babies born between 32 and 37 weeks gestation and weighing 3 pounds or more. If a higher level of care is needed, we will quickly transfer your baby to the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children for additional support.

  • Advanced Support: Our SCN is equipped with advanced systems to assist both premature and full-term babies with oxygen needs, blood glucose issues and elevated bilirubin levels.

  • 24/7 Monitoring: We leverage cutting-edge technology to closely monitor vital signs, ensuring prompt intervention and personalized care for each infant.

  • Infection Control: Rigorous infection control measures are in place to create a safe environment for you and your baby.

Family-Centered Care

We understand the importance of family involvement in a newborn's care. Our SCN promotes family-centered care, providing support and education to parents during their baby's stay.

Our Team

Our multidisciplinary team includes board certified neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, registered nurses (RNs), respiratory therapists and social workers, all working collaboratively to provide the highest standard of care for your newborn. All of our RNs are certified in Neonatal Resuscitation through the American Academy of Pediatrics, so you can rest easy knowing your baby is getting the best care possible.

At Madison Hospital, we prioritize the health and well-being of every newborn in our Level II Special Care Nursery. Trust us to provide the specialized care your baby deserves during this critical time.

Support Services

  • Breastfeeding Support: We strongly believe in the benefits of breastfeeding, and it shows. Our breastfeeding support services are among the state’s best, earning multiple recognitions including Baby Friendly USA, Better Bama Babies and Breastfeeding Friendly Business. Our International Board Certified Lactation Consultants are here to help nursing moms and newborns get off to a successful start. The SCN also offers temperature-monitored breast milk storage and a barcode scanning system for patient verification. Donor milk and fortification are available if needed.

  • Canines for Coping: We recognize the emotional challenges families may face when welcoming a newborn. That’s why we have our very own facility dog, Apple, who has special training and the perfect personality to help patients and their loved ones cope with a hospital stay. Apple is a frequent visitor to our SCN – just look for her wagging tail!

  • Nursery Cuddlers: Therapeutic talk and touch are important to the development of your newborn. Available by request, specially trained Nursery Cuddler volunteers can hold and comfort your baby while you rest.

  • Community Support: Project Sweet Peas and the Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund are just two of the many community groups that support our SCN babies and families.

  • Follow-up Support: Our commitment extends beyond your baby‘s Madison Hospital stay. Schedule a free outpatient lactation visit if you need expert advice, and be sure to join our popular Breastfeeding Support Group.
